Brussel Sprouts - Really?

When you think about brussel sprouts, does anything good come to mind?  It never used to in my world, but I've since seen the light!  I never had them at home growing up, but do vividly remember visiting with Aunt Helen and Uncle Larry and having those green funny looking round things on the table.  Never liked them, but we had to eat them since they were "good for us".  It wasn't a good memory of visiting Braintree, MA.

So I avoided them over the years unless I found myself in an upscale steak house and someone at the table ordered them smothered with onions and bacon.  Bacon - somehow that removes any of the healthy vibes....

Recently, I found a funny looking stalk in the grocery store and decided to give them a try once again.  Hey, I'm a big girl now and understand that every food has good qualities, so into the basket went the brussel sprouts.

I looked at this strange thing for a couple of days and made the decision to create something that did not look like the sprouts of old and make them tasty.  I cleaned them off the stalk and removed the outer leaves that did not belong.  I cut them in half and put them in a plastic baggie, added olive oil and ensured they were all covered with the goodness.

Next, they went on a cookie sheet, cut side down and I seasoned them with grey salt and pepper.  I know salt is a concern for some, but this dish really does taste better with a good dose of salt.

Bake at 350 for 20 minutes, sprinkle with freshly grated parmesan cheese and serve.

Wow, do I love finding new, tasty, colorful and wonderful dishes to make.  Both Jim and I loved them and will now continue to make them whenever we have the chance.

Do yourself a favor and find a new vegtable or one, like me, that you have not eaten in years.  Take it home and taste it again.  You might just find yourself smiling for all the right reasons.

Fino a quel momento (until that time)

  1. I bet their delicious roasted - one way I have yet to try them! I'm not a huge fan but I do make them every once in a while. And Parmesan makes everything taste good!
